Taxes and Tomatoes…….

Tax season is over and our taxes have been e-filed. We are happy to say no additional taxes had to be paid this year.
Now… it’s time to start the Tomatoes. Here in the High Desert, through trial and error, we have come to the conclusion that mid April is a good time to start seeds indoors. By starting our seeds this time of the year, they’ll be ready to plant around Memorial Weekend.
Using our Tax season and Memorial weekend as reminders. This makes it easy to remember when to start gardening. Taxes and Tomatoes means get those seeds started other wise Memorial weekend will be hear before we’re ready.
This year we’re trying something a little different. We bought some organic, bio-degradable, made from corn cups/glasses to use a planting pots to start the seeds. We drilled about 8 small holes in the bottom of the cups and placed them in various trays. Then mixed home-grown compost, some left over potting soil and some good old fashion earth from our garden. Gardeners don’t use dirt….it’s that yucky stuff that gets under your fingernails. Wooden Popsicle sticks were used for plant identification. Watering in the trays and and not the individual pots allows the water to wick up through the holes in the cup bottoms while protecting the seedlings and encouraging them to flourish. Transplanting should a breeze since we should able to peel back the bottom of the cups and plant the entire cup in the ground and not disturb the roots.
