Lesson Learned Re: Smog Certificate

What an awful experience! We sold a vehicle only to learn the buyer started the registration process, then drove it for a couple of months, before taking it to have it smog checked. When it left here it was running fine. Our buyer noticed it was making a funny noise, missing a little before it was smog checked. But they didn’t get it check out, for two months! Yet they drove it up and down the hill till it over heated a bit!!!!
Yep! It failed! It failed due to a burnt valve. Turns out we had to repair the burnt valve in order to have it smog checked. That was an Expensive lesson!
Writing “AS IS” on sales receipt is no longer acceptable according to the DMV. It must say “vehicle is sold for off-road use only” and “buyer agrees to obtain a smog certificate”. Live and learn. Next time we sell a vehicle it will be have a smog certificate before we turn over the keys!

oh my goodness!! So you and Tom had to put $$$ into a vehicle you already sold? Doesnt that release of liability mean that you are no longer liable for it? This state is sooo stupid when it comes to the DMV!
