Decoration Day now Memorial Day

Originally Memorial Day was called Decoration Day – The day the graves of those who served in the Armed Forces were Decorated in honor of their service. This honor is believed to have begun after the Civil War according to History.com. For so many today it’s just another three-day weekend. Previously American Townships each celebrated with parades and picnics. Now Memorial Day, to many, is the first weekend of summer. Americans head out to beaches, mountains, lakes, and amusement parks. Many of us forgetting the original intention of the Holiday was to give us the day to decorate the graves of those who lost their lives protecting this great country of ours.
Thankfully, the tradition has been kept up by many Boy and Girl Scout Troops across America. I’m as guilty as everyone else not being aware of the original reason for Memorial Day. However, I like most American’s are grateful for the service of those who died to protect our freedom as well as those who are serving now. Please come home safe. Thank you and God Bless you.
