July 25th has become a special date for the two of us. Years ago when hubby was President of the Hesperia Wrangler’s Inc. the club decided to adopt the idea to collect cans of food as part of each contestants entry fee. These cans were then donated to the Salvation Army in hopes to offer some additional support for those in need. The Salvation Army has always been most appreciative of the donations received.
It was then that we, hubby and I, set aside that date to donate food to the Salvation Army in order that we may help some people who are in need. Throughout the years we have shopped for a weeks worth of food for a family of four. We have tried to include a variety of canned veggies, fruit, soups, some instant potatoes, noodles, rice, beans, or mac and cheese. We have also add the occasional canned ham, tuna, shredded beef as well as some canned spaghetti sauce. For breakfast: dry milk and a variety pack of cereals. Desserts are always much harder to find. Snacks like cheese and crackers, popcorn, or jello all work, although we would like to add a cake or brownie mix to our box they’re not advisable, due to storage concerns.
This year we plan on celebrating Christmas in July again and hope others will join us in this non-advertised good will season. We have always felt blessed that we have been fortunate enough to celebrate the spirit of Christmas twice a year. One can, one meal, or one weeks groceries; each and every item be greatly appreciated by those who would otherwise gone without.
