Cherokee Nation

Saturday we drove up to the Cherokee Reservation and toured the Museum. We enjoyed the historical information presented as well as all the artifacts. We then drove through the town of Cherokee, which is the headquarters for the Eastern Cherokee Nation. Today’s Eastern Cherokees are direct descendants from the Cherokees who refused to give up their land to the US. They literally stood their ground. In doing so they didn’t have to participate in the Trail of Tears. The Oconaluftee River, was bigger than thought. It runs through town yet a lot of people were taking advantage of the cool water during the heat of the day. Children were playing in the river and just south of town – others were fly fishing in the river.
